新元号が発表されました。滅多にない機会ですので、名前の由来に関する海外の報道を調べてみる事にしました。

万葉集にある「初春（しょしゅん）の令月（れいげつ）にして　気（き）淑（よ）く風（かぜ）和（やわら）ぎ　梅（うめ）は鏡前（きょうぜん）の粉（こ）を披（ひら）き　蘭（らん）は珮（はい）後（ご）の香（こう）を薫（かおら）す」との文言から引用したものであります。（首相官邸ホームページ）

ここで、令月とは、”おめでたい、物事を行うのによい月”と言う意味であり、安倍首相は、”令和”という名前には『人々が美しく心を寄せ合う中で、文化が生まれ育つという意味が込められている。』と説明なさいました。
さて、海外メディアの反応はどのようなものでしょうか。以下は4月1日の海外メディア各社報道のタイトルです。事実の記載に留めるのか、内容にまで踏み込むのかで、各社の個性が出ています。

日本語『令』のもつニュアンスを英語にするのは難しい
「令」の字に関しては、縁起が良い”auspicious”、幸運な”fortunate”、良い”good”、美しい”beautiful”だけでなく、order, commandといった「命令」の意味合いもある（が万葉集では異なる意味で用いられている）と一部のメディアでは紹介されました。これを受け、「命令」は説明として適切なのかと日本でちょっとした議論になりました。

たしかに「令」をorder,commandの意味と捉えた上で『令和』を解釈すると、”和を強要する”という意味になってしまいます。これはあまりよろしくないですね。考えてみると、「令」の持つポジティブな意味合いを、我々日本人は感覚的に捉えている面があります。この”感覚”を外国人の方に伝えようとした場合、どういった表現が適切なのかが悩ましい。日本政府が説明する際は、”beautiful harmony”にすると落ち着いた様ですが、『令』の持つ”おめでたい”ニュアンスとは少しずれているように感じます。わかりやすさを重視したのでしょうか。

注：auspiciousの意味は、”showing signs that something is likely to be successful in the future”
 fortunateの意味は、”having or bringing an advantage ,an opportunity,a piece of good luck,etc”


海外メディアはどう伝えたのか？
以下は”令和”の意味に関する各社の説明です。滅多にないので記しておきます。

CNN：The era, whose name includes the character for “harmony,” will formally begin once the new Emperor is crowned on May 1.

The Guardian：Rei and Wa, taken from the eighth-century work Man’yoshu, the oldest anthology of Japanese poetry, can be read as “fortunate” or “auspicious”, and “peace” or “harmony”.

外国人に元号の意味を聞かれたら？
元号の説明については雑談として話題に出されることがあるかもしれませんので、一言ぐらいはコメント出来るようにしておきたいものです。

安部首相の説明「『令和』には、人々が美しく心を寄せ合う中で、文化が生まれ育つという意味が込められています。」を英語に訳してみました。いかがでしょうか？
The meaning behind the name of Reiwa is that culture is born and nourished as people’s hearts are drawn beautifully together.

CNNに掲載された下記表現も参考になります。
Eras are about more than who is the emperor of the day. They are also, for example, the basis of the Japanese calendar system: 2018 was Heisei 30, coming three decades after the era began.
意訳：”年号”には、誰が天皇かという以上の意味がある。年号はまた、日本の暦の基礎をなしており、例えば2018年は平成30年で、その年号が始まってから30年が経過しているという事だ。
